How the numbers are worked out

CBM (cubic metres) = length × width × height in metres. From centimetres: (L × W × H) ÷ 1,000,000 × number of cartons. It is the single most useful number for any sea freight shipment.

Volumetric (dimensional) weight converts size into a billable weight because carriers charge for the space you take, not just the mass. Air freight uses a 6000 divisor, courier express (DHL/UPS/FedEx) uses 5000: (L × W × H in cm) ÷ divisor.

Chargeable weight is the greater of gross weight and volumetric weight. Dense cargo is charged on actual weight; light, bulky cargo is charged on volume. Density (kg per CBM) is the quick tell: below about 167 kg/CBM your air shipment is priced by volume, above it by weight.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate CBM?

CBM = length × width × height in metres. For a carton in centimetres, multiply L × W × H and divide by 1,000,000, then multiply by the number of cartons.

What is chargeable weight?

The greater of your actual gross weight and the volumetric weight. Air uses a 6000 divisor, express 5000, and sea LCL charges on whichever is greater: CBM or weight at 1,000 kg = 1 CBM.

When should I ship by air, sea or express from China?

Small, urgent or high-value loads go by express or air. Above roughly 15 CBM a full container by sea is usually cheapest. Mid-size 2–15 CBM cargo often goes sea LCL, and dense cargo can favour sea on cost per kg.

Are these rates exact?

No. They are indicative planning ranges that move with lane, season, fuel and volume. Send your details to Ren Fu Ren for a binding all-in price within 2 hours.

Do the figures include duties and taxes?

No, they are freight only. Duties and destination taxes depend on HS code and country. Ask for a DDP quote to see one all-in price with duties included.
