Sea vs Air

When to Choose Sea Freight

A quick framework for picking the right mode.

📦

Volume > 2 CBM

Below 2 CBM, air or express is usually cheaper per kg. Above 2 CBM, sea wins on cost.

💰

Cost is Priority

Sea freight is typically 70–85% cheaper than air per kg for the same lane.

📅

Lead Time > 30 Days

If your in-stock-by date is 30+ days out, sea is the smart move.

⚖️

Heavy / Bulky Cargo

Machinery, furniture, fixtures — all far cheaper by ocean than air.

FAQ

Sea Freight from China — FAQ

How long does sea freight from China take?
Port-to-port ocean transit from China is roughly 14–20 days to the US West Coast, 28–35 days to the US East Coast and Europe, and 18–28 days to Australia. Door-to-door DDP adds origin haulage and customs clearance on both ends.
What is the difference between FCL and LCL sea freight?
FCL (Full Container Load) means you book an entire 20ft or 40ft container — best value once you fill roughly 15+ CBM. LCL (Less than Container Load) shares a container with other shippers and is charged per cubic meter, ideal for smaller shipments below 15 CBM.
How much cargo fits in a 20ft and 40ft container?
A 20ft container holds about 28 CBM (usable ~25–26 CBM) and up to ~28 tons. A 40ft container holds about 58 CBM (usable ~55 CBM), and a 40ft High Cube about 68 CBM. We help you choose the most cost-efficient option for your volume.
Do you offer DDP sea freight with duties and taxes included?
Yes. Our DDP sea freight covers ocean freight, export and import customs clearance, duties, taxes and door delivery — one all-in price with nothing to pay on arrival. It is popular with Amazon FBA sellers and importers who want a single invoice.
What documents do I need for sea freight from China?
Typically a commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, and any product-specific certificates (e.g. MSDS for chemicals, FDA/CE where required). For US shipments we also file ISF and AMS. We prepare and check all documents for you.
