"Air freight" and "express" both put your cargo on a plane, but they're different products with very different economics. Confusing the two is how importers either overpay by 3× on a courier or wait a week longer than they needed to. Here's exactly when to use each on the China export lanes.

Why Couriers Get Expensive Fast
Express is billed on chargeable weight using a divisor of 5000, vs 6000 for air freight — so the same bulky box costs more by courier. Add the all-in door-to-door convenience premium and a 200 kg courier shipment can cost several times the air-freight equivalent. Couriers win on small parcels; they lose badly on volume.
When Express Is Worth It
- Samples and pre-production pieces
- Small, high-value items where speed protects a launch or restock
- One-off urgent replenishment under ~100 kg
- You want zero customs involvement — the courier handles it end-to-end
When Air Freight Wins
- Shipments above ~100–150 kg
- You have a forwarder to handle clearance and last-mile (cheaper than courier's built-in margin)
- Bulky-but-not-tiny cargo punished by the courier's 5000 divisor
- Regular replenishment where a day or two doesn't change the outcome
And When Neither Is Right
If your cargo is large and not urgent, both air options are overkill — ocean (FCL/LCL) or sea-air multimodal will cut cost dramatically for a few extra days. Match the mode to the shipment, not to habit.
